Making Jelly 24th January

Last few weeks we have been talking about materials. Today we were talkin about jelly-different flavours, what we eat it with, when we eat it, where we can get jelly. Then teacher showed us the jelly. It was in shapes of cubes. Ms.Crotty asked us if we knew how to make jelly- and we told her how. Teacher boiled the kettle and we talked about how dangerous boiling water is and how only adults should touch a kettle and boiling water. We heard the kettle boil and watched the steam. We placed the jelly in the bowl and added the water to it. We watched the jelly dissolve and we stirred it and the water turned red and all the jelly melted / dissolved. We placed in the fridge and we hope tomorrow that we will have wibbly wobbly jelly.

Patterns

This week we were talking about patterns in Maths. We see patterns everywhere - on animals, on tiles, on clothes, on floors, on walls. We made patterns in school with counters, bears, straws, beads and links. We brought in some patterns from home.

Christmas Play

We have been working very hard practising our lines and our songs for the Christmas Play "The Grumpy Sheep" We preformed the play for our parents and all the children and teachers in the school.

Winter is here now and gone are the Autumn Colours. The colours of Winter are black, blue, white and silver. We did some colour mixing and mixed up all the cold colours and look at the results. So many colours.

Guzzler and Energy Saving. 5th December

Today we had a special visitor. Guzzler came to visit us. He is a green monster who likes to have and save energy. He gave us tips on how to be good to our environment and to save using unnecessary energy sources. For example where possible we should try to walk, run, cycle, skooter to places rather then using the car all the time. If we live near school we should try and walk instead of coming in the car. If we need to come to school by car we should try and carpool with our neighbours / friends or come on a bus. At home we should switch off lights and switches when we leave a room. We learned lots of tips and we are going to try and carry them out to make Guzzler happy.

Our Christmas Tree 5th December

We are getting very excited about Christmas. We have a Christmas Tree in our classroom and we all helped to decorate it today. It was great fun. Look how nice our tree looks when we all worked together to decorate it.
It's beginning to feel alot like Christmas......

Reading

Reading and being read to is very important for younger children. Everyday we choose one book from the library and we spend five minutes, uninterupted flicking through a story and looking at the pictures.

Is it Waterproof?

Today we talked about objects that are waterproof and need to be waterproof.....like coats, wellies, tents, umbrella's, our skin. We tested objects to investigate which were waterproof and which were not. Objects like plastic bags, plastic gloves, an umbrella, boots, and a raincoat were all waterproof and did not let the water through. Objects like tissue paper, newspaper and socks were not waterproof.

This week is Science Week in Galway. We had a Bubble Show in the P.E Hall to mark Science week.It was really interesting. We never knew you could make bubbles in so many different ways and also put things like smoke and your hand into the middle of a bubble. What a great show.

Ms. McLoughlin's class made some rockets and they invited us out to see them being launched into space. They went really high into space. The children used a pump to pump air into the rockets to help them launch into the air.

Magnets

Today we talked about magnets. Magnets come in all shapes and sizes. We investigated with magnets in the classroom. We discovered they were attracted to metal objects and that they did not stick to materials made of wool, plastic, glass, wood or card. It was great fun trying to discover what the magnets would stick to.

Sense Of Taste

This week we were talking about taste. We all sat opposite a partner and stuck out our tongue (which we were allowed to do on this occasion) to show them our taste buds. We all have taste buds that send a message to our brain and tell our brain what the food tastes like. So we tasted lots of food like chocolate, salt and vinegar crisps, lemon and natural yogurt, to test our taste buds and we got lots of different results.

Thriller

Hallowe'en Walk

Today we all dressed up - even the teachers and we went for a walk around Renmore. It was to raise money for the school. We all worked very hard and brought in our sponsorship cards and money. Thank you all so much for your hard work. You helped raise over 6,000 euro. That was fantastic. We had a great day. We finished off the day by looking at the 1st and 2nd classes dancing to Thriller. Well done to all those children, their teachers and Ms.Lally for the brilliant display. We really enjoyed it.

Dancing Raisins

Today we carried out a Science experiment with raisins. We placed some raisins into water and the raisins did not float and sunk to the bottom of the plastic glass. Then we placed some raisins into fizzy 7up. The raisins bopped up and down like they were doing a dance. Ms.Crotty explained that the 7up was full of fizz, or little bubbles of carbon dioxide that caused the raisins to float to the top. We played some music so our raisins could dance.

Planting Bulbs.

Today we learned all about flowers and what they need to grow. They need sunshine, water or rain, soil or compost, and a flower pot. We each got a daffodil bulb and we whispered to our bulb....wishing it to grow. We then put some soil into a pot, placed the bulb into the pot and then placed some more soil over the bulb. We then watered them. We will keep them in our classroom and observe them every week. In the Springtime we should have some yellow daffodils.

Autumn Nature Walk...

Today was a beautiful Autumn day and we went for a little nature walk. We observed lots of things. We saw the leaves and their different colours. Some of the leaves were on the ground, some were on the branches and some were even falling off the trees as were looking at them. We saw two nests, a spiders web and a holly bush with red berries. Autumn is a lovely season with lots of colours.

Autumn Time.

We have a new season and it is called Autumn. We talked about the squirrel and all the animals that are busy getting ready to hibernate for the Winter. The leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. We painted an Autumn tree and used our fingers to paint the falling leaves - they are all different colours - orange, brown, red, yellow and some still are green.

Every morning we come into school we play with toys and different objects. This way we learn how to play with our friends and to share and play fairly and most importantly to tidy up afterwards.
